Strength Training Meets Data: How I Work with Human Powered Health

If you’ve trained with me for any amount of time, you know I don’t just hand you a workout and hope for the best.

We assess.
We adjust.
We build with intention.

And now, through my partnership with Human Powered Health in Edina, we can take that a step further — with real, measurable data to support what we’re already doing in the gym.

What This Partnership Means for You

This gives my clients and members at American Strength access to advanced testing like:

• DEXA scans
• Resting metabolic rate (RMR) testing
• Movement screening
• Force plates
• Running gait analysis and shoe fitting
• VO₂ max and performance testing

The goal isn’t to overwhelm you with data.

The goal is to use the right data at the right time to improve your results.

How I Actually Use This With Clients

This isn’t a “go get tested and good luck” situation.

We use the data together and apply it directly to your:

• training program
• nutrition plan
• recovery strategy

It becomes part of your coaching — not a separate thing.

DEXA Scans: Body Composition Without Guessing

For most clients, this is the most useful place to start.

A DEXA scan tells us:
• how much lean muscle you have
• how much body fat you have
• where that mass is distributed
• bone density

This is especially valuable for:

✔ Bodybuilding prep
✔ Fat loss phases
✔ Clients stuck at a plateau
✔ Anyone who wants to know if they’re actually building muscle

How often should you do it?

For most people:
• 1–2 times per year is enough
• During prep or a focused phase, we may use it more strategically

Why it matters

The scale doesn’t tell you what’s actually changing.

DEXA does.

Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR): Dialing in Nutrition

This has been one of the most useful tools from a coaching standpoint.

Your RMR tells us:
• how many calories your body burns at rest
• how your metabolism is functioning
• where your true maintenance might be

From there, we can make better decisions with:

• fat loss phases
• reverse dieting
• muscle-building phases

Real example

I’ve had clients increase food intake after testing — because their metabolism supported it.

More food.
Better performance.
Better results.

For me personally, after 15+ years of tracking macros, it validated what I’ve learned — and helped refine what I need to support training as I get closer to 40 and continue building muscle..

Movement Testing + Force Plates

In the gym, we already look at:

• how you move
• where you compensate
• what needs to improve

This testing allows us to measure it.

We can see:
• left vs right imbalances
• force production
• how much output you’re actually producing

This is especially useful for:
✔ Strength athletes
✔ Clients coming out of injury
✔ Anyone who wants to improve performance, not just “work out”

Running Gait Analysis + Shoe Fitting

I don’t coach a ton of runners — but the ones I do work with log serious miles.

For them, this is huge.

We can look at:
• stride mechanics
• loading patterns
• efficiency
• proper shoe fitting

When you’re putting that kind of volume on your body, small inefficiencies matter.

This helps protect longevity.

What This Looks Like in Practice

Here’s how this typically works:

  1. You come to me with a goal

  2. We decide if testing makes sense

  3. I send you a partner booking link

  4. You complete testing at Human Powered Health in Edina

  5. We review your results together

  6. I adjust your programming and/or nutrition based on the data

You’ll also receive a consultation from their team, and I have access to your results through a coaching portal so I can track changes over time.

Why This Matters

A lot of what we do in coaching is based on experience, patterns, and feedback.

That’s valuable.

But when we can combine that with objective data, we get better outcomes.

This doesn’t replace coaching.

It enhances it.

Who This Is For

This is a great fit if you:

• want to lose body fat and keep muscle
• are preparing for a bodybuilding show
• feel stuck and want more clarity
• want to understand your metabolism
• are a runner or endurance athlete
• want to train with more intention

Final Thoughts

You don’t need every test.

You don’t need constant data.

But the right information, at the right time, can make a big difference.

If you’re curious about any of this, come talk to me at the gym or reach out directly.

We’ll decide what actually makes sense for you — and use it to move forward with purpose.
